Be Your Own Birder

Giveaway Time – Birthday and Anniversary!

It’s a time for celebration this month, and what better way than a big giveaway? In honor of what would be Roger Tory Peterson’s 115th birthday, as well as my 20th anniversary as a freelance writer, I’ve got what could be one of the best giveaways ever, with multiple prizes for the lucky winner.

Something to Celebrate

We can all find something to celebrate every month, whether it is a major holiday, a birthday, a significant anniversary, or a kooky holiday. This month, I happen to be celebrating my 20th anniversary as a freelance writer (oh how far the career has come), the first day of school (always great to get back into a pattern), National Watermelon Day (August 3 – bought a great dog toy), National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day (August 4 – yum!), National Roller Coaster Day (August 16 – love roller coasters!), Pluto Demoted Day (August 24 – still in mourning), National Dog Day (August 26 – can’t resist any dog or puppy!), and more.

The Prize to Win

Whatever you may celebrate this month, join in the giveaway to celebrate the 115th birthday of the father of modern field guides, Roger Tory Peterson, with some of his most popular works. What you could win is amazing – a pair of field guides to birds of North America, both the Eastern and Central North America (Sixth Edition) as well as the Western North America (Fourth Edition) versions! Both are stunning field guides with crisp illustrations, colored range maps, silhouette guides, and more.

In addition, this month’s prize pack will also include a Pocket Naturalist Guide to Birds of Prey for some extra identification help, and an orange Bling Swing to draw tiny feathered friends closer for even better views! One winner will get all four prizes, so don’t miss your chance to enter.

To enter for a chance to win all four amazing prizes, you just have to answer this question in the comments below:

What is your FAVORITE cake flavor?

After all, what’s a celebration without cake? For me, it’s always vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream frosting – but truthfully, it’s rare for me to find a cake (or cake pops, or brownies, or pie, or cookies…) I don’t enjoy, regardless of flavor, filling, or icing.

All entries must include a valid email address in the comment form to be contacted if you win, and please note that the giveaway is only open to participants in the United States. The prize pack will ship directly from Be Your Own Birder (addresses are not shared, sold, or traded) via USPS with tracking information. By entering, all participants agree to the Giveaway Guidelines. Entries will close on Thursday, August 24, 2023, when the winner will be randomly selected. So grab a slice of cake or your favorite celebratory dessert, and enter for your chance to win!

The entry period has ended and comments are now closed.
Stay tuned for the winner announcement!

What is My Favorite Cake Flavor?
Boy did that question stir up many memories. So many cakes to remember brought on a deluge of memories of all my favorite deserts. All of which I can no longer partake because I am now diabetic but that didn’t stop me from remembering all the birthdays I celebrated as a child. And that led to all the birthdays I celebrated with my own children. And then there were the birthdays celebrated with my grandchildren. Unfortunately when thé gréât grans started showing up I was living in Florida and they were living up North so few birthdays celebrated with them.

A lot of times as I grew older I celebrated birthdays and holidays by going birding as it was my favorite pastime. Like you my favorite was always a white cake with butternut frosting but my favorite desert was a strawberry-rhubarb pie although I wouldn’t mind a piece of New York Cheese Cake either or perhaps a Dark Chocolate Brownie. Thanks for helping me take a mouthwatering trip down memory lane.

For me it’s a tie between the Mississippi mud cake with choc fudge frosting my stepmother used to make for my birthday, or my homemade strawberry cake with real/frozen strawberries and homemade strawberry frosting. This is so yummy, now everyone requests it at any time, and that makes any day a fun day!! I made 3 this past may for family birthdays, 1 in June for father’s day, and 1 at the beginning of this month (Aug) for my sister who just turned 66! Luckily we didn’t have that many candles, or we might not have been able to find the cake underneath!
And congrats on you 20th, I always enjoy your writing!

My absolute favorite cake is Apple Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Icing.
AND today 8-18 is my “76th” Birthday.

So, Happy Anniversary to you and Happy Birthday to all us 8/18 birthday folks.

My fave would be a tie between the Mississippi mud cake my stepmother would make me for my birthday or my yummy homemade strawberry cake with strawberry frosting both made with (frozen) strawberries. I just made it on Aug 2 for my sister’s 66th birthday, and in May 3 times for family birthdays and Mothers day, and again in June for Father’s day!!
Congrats on you 20th Anniversary!!🎉 I really enjoy your writing!

Hi Melissa, and Happy Birthday just a few days late. I just found this site again and am so glad to be back with some “old” and very dear friends first met on the Wild Birds homesite.
I can no longer eat cake, but my favorite of all time has to be strawberry shortcake, using real cake, not those little too-sweet cupcake things. Lots of whipped cream and fresh strawberries can make almost ANY cake a dream dessert!
