While January is a time of dreary cold and gray skies for many birding destinations, there’s nothing like Florida for amazing first-of-the-year birding. Let’s celebrate Sunshine State birding with a Florida prize pack giveaway!

Winter Birding in Florida
There are a lot of things that make Florida a top destination for winter birds and birders. The temperatures are warm but the humidity is low for very pleasant days outdoors. Rains are scarce, permitting long hours in the field, and roads are generally dry for better travel and hiking. Winter birds are spending the season, making for amazing diversity with resident species as well as overwintering guests and occasional vagrants and rarities.
Whether you visit top Florida hotspots during the winter or are fortunate to live in the Sunshine State and enjoy feathered friends right in your backyard, it’s a great season to be birding in Florida!
The Prize to Win
To celebrate all of Florida birding, this month’s giveaway is a prize pack focusing on the state’s amazing avifauna. Included are three prizes:

- Backyard Birds of Florida – A practical and engaging guide to the top 25 birds in the state, with identification details, excellent photography, and tips for attracting each bird.
- Everglades Birds – A colorful, reinforced brochure featuring 140+ species for fast and simple identification, from ducks and wading birds to raptors, songbirds, and shorebirds.
- Bling Swing – Because ruby-throated hummingbirds overwinter in Florida, this colorful swing – orange for Florida oranges! – is perfect perch not just in winter, but year-round.

What Florida bird species would you most
want to see or attract to your Florida yard?
I’m thrilled that I have 49 birds already on my Florida yard list, but I’d love for a Florida scrub-jay or Carolina chickadee to appear as number 50! As for a bird to see, I’d be thrilled to add the barred owl to my overall life list. I’ve heard the buggers in the neighborhood, but never yet had the privilege to see one!
When adding a comment as your entry for the giveaway, be sure to include a valid email for contact if you are selected. The giveaway is only open to United States participants, and by entering, participants agree to the Giveaway Guidelines. We have been discussing a trip down to the Everglades in February or March, trying to figure out if we can do it, my boys have never been to Florida so seeing any birds there will be exciting, maybe something colorful like a flamingo?
Snowy egret
The Roseate Spoonbill was a favorite of mine when I visited Florida.
If I lived there I would think I died and went to heaven if I could attract one to my yard.
Painted Bunting would be a dream come true. My next most desired Florida bird would be Reddish Egret, both would be lifers.
I’m going to Florida to bird next weekend! I’d love to see another Limpkin!
hope to get back to Florida soon. herons
