I’ve long considered myself a writer – a term I define by articles for newsletters, blogs, websites, newspapers, magazines, etc. – but never sought to be an author – defined by books, preferably of the printed-pages-and-covers variety. Still, a writing challenge cannot be overlooked, and when Quadrille Publishing approached me with the potential for manuscript dealings, my writing life shifted and I became not just a writer, but an author. The journey has been an interesting one!

A Junior Scientist’s Guide to Owls, Eagles, Penguins, and Other Bird Species

Children have a wonder about everything around them, and birds are even more fascinating with their amazing diversity, their ability to fly, and their stunning colors and shapes. The younger someone first discovers birds and becomes enamored by them, the longer a life of conservation and connection to birds they will enjoy, which can have a greater impact on the natural world we all share.
Birds for Kids helps encourage young readers become fledgling ornithologists, from first introducing youngsters to birds to encouraging projects and further flight into the avian world. Illustrations are boldly colored to bring the birds to life and engage readers, while the text is informative and educational but not ornithologically overwhelming or pedantic. As kids fly their way through these pages, they will also discover 35 bird species in more detail, with scientific pronunciations phonetically spelled out and fast facts about each one. Many of these birds will already be familiar and will help children learn more about the birds they see every day, while others are more unique, eye-catching species they may meet in zoos, aquariums, or aviaries.
