The osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is one of the world’s most cosmopolitan birds, found on every continent except Antarctica. They are adaptible to different environments, and can be equally at home in marshlands or along coasts as they can in urban areas near sufficient bodies of fish-rich water.
Because these beautiful raptors are so widespread, what seems to be a simple name can actually have many different pronunciations from different accents and language influences. So how do you really say osprey?

How to Pronounce Osprey
Regardless of language or emphasis, the first pronunciation issue is the number of syllables in the word. Fortunately, osprey is universally agreed at two syllables, which makes it easier to break down for how to say each one.
First is the “os” syllable, which has a few options. This might be pronounced as “ah” rhyming with ta, lah, fah, spa, rah, and bah. Another option, however, is “oh” rhyming with mow, low, go, bro, tow, and stow.
Both are pronounced in the plural with the “s” attached to the first syllable. Adding in emphasis, that gives us four possible combinations just for the first two letters of the bird’s name:
- ahs
- AHS
- ohs
- OHS
The “prey” can be pronounced with either a long “eee” or a long “ay.” The first would rhyme with flea, be, tree, me, key, and ski, while the second rhymes with day, stay, may, ray, bay, and jay. Adding in emphasis again, we have four more options for the second syllable:
- preee
- PREEE
- pray
- PRAY
Let’s put it all together, which adds up to 16 different variations.

- ahs-preee
- ahs-PREEE
- ahs-pray
- ahs-PRAY
- AHS-preee
- AHS-PREEE
- AHS-pray
- AHS-PRAY
- ohs-preee
- ohs-PREEE
- ohs-pray
- ohs-PRAY
- OHS-preee
- OHS-PREEE
- OHS-pray
- OHS-PRAY
Which Pronunciation is Correct for Osprey?
To be clear, there is no one single absolutely correct pronunciation for osprey, or for any bird name. Native language, regional dialects, and personal preference are all factors in exactly how a bird’s name may be pronounced. So long as you are able to effectively communicate which bird you are talking about, the pronunciation is correct.
That being said, the vast majority of pronunciations worldwide favors the “ahs” or “AHS” first syllable. The two most common variations are between British English and American English. The British pronunciation generally prefers “pray” while the American pronunciation leans more toward “preee.” The actual emphasis on either syllable has much less variation and in fact both syllables are often equalized without any distinct difference in emphasis on either one.
Myself, I’m an “AHS-preee” girl, though the emphasis is subtle and could just as easily be “ahs-preee” in my vocabulary. Which pronunciation do you use?

Since I’m a transplanted Brit, I pronounce the first syllable as Oss – as in Moss, Boss, Loss (short O) and the second syllable as pray/prey
Since “prey” (animal) is pronounced like “pray,” I pronounce it as ahs-pray, with just the slightest emphasis on the “ahs.”
