The killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) is near and dear to me as one of the first bird names I ever learned, taught to me by my grandfather. They are fascinating plovers, a “shorebird” often found far from any type of shore. They have bold, brilliant markings yet also spectacular camouflage and disappear when they hold still, only becoming visible again with their characteristic head bobs. I love seeing killdeers, in all their glory – but these photos take their beauty to a new level.
